[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, May 26 — According to an exclusive report by SBS, Coupang is under scrutiny for adopting conflicting legal positions regarding unpaid severance benefits for temporary workers.

The report states that Coupang’s logistics unit, Coupang CFS, has been undergoing criminal proceedings for allegedly failing to pay approximately KRW 120 million in severance to 40 daily workers. During the first trial last month, the company submitted letters of non-punishment after compensating 일부 피해자들, a move seen as an attempt to mitigate criminal liability under offenses prosecuted upon complaint.

However, in a separate civil lawsuit involving similar claims, Coupang has maintained that it has no legal obligation to provide severance pay. Despite a court ruling recognizing the company’s payment obligation, Coupang has filed an appeal.

The differing stances—acknowledging compensation in criminal proceedings while disputing liability in civil litigation—have raised questions over the company’s legal strategy and consistency.
