[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, June 2, 2026 — Japan has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into certain steel imports from South Korea, China, and Taiwan, raising the prospect of new trade measures targeting key industrial materials.

Japan’s Ministry of Finance of Japan and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on June 1 that they will begin a probe into two categories of steel products—hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel.

The investigation follows a petition filed in February by major domestic producers, including Nippon Steel and JFE Steel, which claimed that increased imports had caused material injury by eroding their market share.

The products under investigation include hot-rolled steel sheets and strips, widely used in automotive and construction applications, and cold-rolled steel sheets and strips, commonly used in home appliances and auto parts.

Authorities noted that these products are widely utilized across industries, and that global oversupply—particularly from Chinese producers—has been a growing concern in international markets.

The probe is expected to conclude within one year, after which the government will determine whether to impose anti-dumping duties.

Japan Iron and Steel Federation Chairman Masayuki Hirose said the industry will continue discussions on potential additional countermeasures.
